What the 2014 Olympics Proved About Musckuloskeletal Ultrasound

What the 2014 Olympics Taught Us (About Musculoskeletal Ultrasound)

Dr. Scott Nall may not be an expert in ice hockey, but he sure does know a lot about musculoskeletal ultrasound (MSKUS)! MSKUS gets a 10 across the board for being an efficient and accurate diagnostic tool. The games concluded earlier this week; here are my important take-away lessons from the 2014 Sochi Olympics:

The Opening Act is Everything

“You never get a second chance to make a first impression.” Every four years, the host country tries to trump the previous country’s opening ceremony. Endless hours are spent into developing and executing a perfect program on the largest world stage. On a (much) smaller scale, the staff members at Village Osteopath continually strive to provide our patients with the highest quality of care – from the moment you call or email us, to your follow up visit. We are proud to offer our patients 60 minute initial visits, 30 minute follow up visits, and no over-booking (less wait time)! We switched billing companies to better serve you. If you have any questions regarding your account (if your date of service was after September 1, 2014), please contact Resolutions Billing at (480) 632-9292. If there is something we can do better, or that you love about what we are doing, be sure to let us know!

Close Enough Never Is
With these games, a fraction of a second can mean the difference between silver and gold. A few degrees separate a perfectly executed triple axel, and a fail. Saying a performance was, “good enough” essentially means relinquishing a title.

Is MSKUS accurate? You betcha. A study conducted in an emergency setting found that ultrasounds were 86-100% effective in ruling out a fracture of the extremities, and had a 73-100% specificity for finding or ruling in a fracture of the extremities when one existed. When a patient sees a physician trained in utilization of MSKUS, they receive:

  • Accurate needle placement
  • Higher Resolution of Soft Tissue (versus MRI)
  • No Exposure to Ionizing Radiation
  • Complaint-Specific Exam and Imagery

 Speed Wins

MSKUS wins the gold because it saves patients time and money! They don’t have to pay for another form of imaging, and are able to examine their injury in ‘real time’ during their initial office visit with Dr. Nall. The source of the pain can be pinpointed and manipulated while under ultrasonic imagery.

How many times have you gone to a doctor’s office for an appointment, and walked out with an X-Ray or MRI order? You need to wait for another appointment, wait for those imaging results, then wait for your follow up appointment with your doctor. Yes, there are some cases where an X-Ray, MRI, or CT scan are required as the Standard of Care or for insurance purposes. But why should you have to play the waiting game if you have a better option?
