Hormones 101 – The Ins and Outs of the Ups and Downs

“I feel like my old self and can’t believe what a difference it has made in so many things.  My mind is clearer, I have more energy, my mood has leveled and I am much calmer, I also feel happier and much more optimistic.  If I had known how much better I would feel, I would have started this a couple years ago!”

When most people hear ‘hormones’, here are a couple images that pop up:

Have you ever associated hormones with their ability to help any of the following symptoms?

  • Fatigue
  • Weight Gain/Inability to Lose Weight
  • Difficulty Sleeping
  • Fuzzy Thinking
  • Loss of Libido
  • Osteoporosis/Osteopenia
  • Anxiety/Irritability
  • Hot Flashes and Vaginal Dryness (women)
  • Decreased Strength & Endurance, Erection Issues (men)

Anything from childbirth, to changes in exercise intensity, and yes, aging, can affect the balance of your hormone levels. The above are just some of the symptoms associated with unbalanced hormones leading to decreased quality of life, and in some cases, health risks for both men and women.

How Hormones Work – The Most Basic Explanation, Ever.

Hormones work similar to the news. Originating at one place, they bring their message to another location and evoke a response once received. Their effect can be widespread or local. Like an over-told news piece, or news yet to be received (birth of a newborn, test results, your boss’s call…), there is a delicate balance between hormones that help us maintain optimal functionality in the ebb and flow of life.

Don’t let the letters confuse you. The three are as similar as comparing horses and humans. Really, though. I’ll explain:

Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT) is any form of treatment where the patient uses hormones to replace or supplement the supply of hormones produced by the body (or in some cases, the lack thereof).

Studies have shown HRT can be more risky than it’s worth…

Natural Hormone Replacement Therapy (NHRT) involves using ‘natural’ sources to produce hormones for HRT. What you may not know is that some of the ‘natural’ sources can include the urine of pregnant mares, which is not at all natural to humans. Since these ‘natural’ hormones are only natural for horses, when our body’s receptors receive them, they don’t necessarily respond the same as they do to our self-produced hormones. Also, side effects of ‘natural’ or synthetic HRT can include increase risk of breast cancer, blood clotting, and high blood pressure.  HRT should bring out the best in you, without the stress of dangerous symptoms.

Thankfully, We Offer Another Option

Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) is the way Dr. Nall treats patients at Village Osteopath. Bioidentical hormones are exactly what they sound like. They are identical in molecular structure to the hormones our bodies produce. Because they are identical to what is naturally occurring in your body, the hormone receptors in the body are receiving the same ‘news’ and thus following the same exact response pathways your body normally does.

At Village Osteopath, Dr. Nall analyzes lab results, combined with your symptoms and wellness goals, to create an treatment plan as individual as you are by using pharmacies located locally and nation-wide to provide a custom compounded bio-identical hormones.

How Do You Know if BHRT Is Right For You?

For starters, symptoms are a great marker. If you are feeling “off’, “not-quite-right”, or “not as sharp as I used to be”, your body could be telling you something. Before going straight to HRT, make sure you’re doing your part by having a yearly routine physical done, and reviewing your dietary and supplement intake with a physician. The best quantitative way to check for hormone imbalance is to have lab work done and reviewed by a doctor familiar with BHRT. For quality, consistency, and convenience, patients can have their yearly physical, BHRT consult, and labs done with Dr. Nall at Village Osteopath.
